Abstract: »This paper explores how East Slavonic churchmen conceived of victimhood in cases of sexual assault. Beginning with a medieval hagiography documenting the life of a male survivor, and ending with a real first-person report from the seventeenth century, it shows that churchmen were able to imagine male victimhood at the hands of both women and other men. With these and other cases in mind, I ask whether the gendering of sexual assault might prompt broader reconsideration of the history of ideas about gender and sexuality in Orthodox tradition.« (Source: Online Program)
